Any suggestions on books written by Australian authors or set in Australia?

I am required to find a book written by an Australian author or set in Australia for my Global Humanities class. (It's a High School Course, that is an English credit.) Do you have any suggestions on some books?

Any suggestions on books written by Australian authors or set in Australia?
Hey I'm an Aussie so try these:

Letters from the Inside by John Marsden (anything by him is really good)

Looking for Alibrandi by Melina Marchetta

Authors ..

Helen Garner

Robert Drewe

Judy Nunn

Bryce Courtney
Reply:The Torn Birds!!!!
Reply:One book which grasps the whole picture of the initial white settlement of Australia is 'The Fatal Shore' by Robert Hughes. This is serious but readable history. Books like Thorn Birds are light weight in comparison. (I don't want to be rude about it - it sold millions and I too write romances.) If you want to make a mark on your Humanities course, better to have a book with some meat to it, I say.
Reply:well, they may be 'young' for you, but the 'rowen of rin' books are by emily rodda, she counts. i am in the 9th grade and love them....

she's written other things, but i haven read them yet. the rowen books are good though.
Reply:You might try _The Timeless Land_, by Eleanor Dark.
Reply:Try Australian author Anna Tambour's excellent first novel SPOTTED LILY, a dark satire fantasy also set in Australia for the most part.

SPOTTED LILY by Anna Tambour on Amazon:

Also check out work by Margo Lanagan.
Reply:Garth Nix, he writes fantasy/sci-fi stuff i dunno its thats what you want but hes Australian
Reply:I agree about The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough who is an Australian author. It was an excellent, epic book. She also wrote a series of Roman Empire historical novels called The Masters of Rome series. She wrote Tim (very touching); The Song of Troy; On, Off and others.

You may want to check out some other Australian authors like:

-Matthew Riley (Contest)

-Morris West (The Shoes of the Fisherman)

-Patrick White (The Eye of the Storm, which won the 1973 Nobel prize for Literature)

-James Clavell (Shogun)

There is an entire list of Australian authors at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Aus...
Reply:Chasing after the wind by Dale Harcombe set in western Sydney, NSW during late 1990s and Despression era.
