How can I organise a library of over 2000 books?

In my home we have a library that consists of over 2000 books. I want to organize the books. The thing is that I don't want to put anything outside the book that will make it seem like I have an official library in my living room! (in libraries for example they usually put a label on the cover of each book with a code number, but I don't want to do that) Furthermore, I want to organize my library in an electronic interface. What program can I use to do that? Is there a special program that organizes books? I would like not to use internet applications but if you think you can answer to any of the above questions, I'm waiting desperately for your answer.

Reply:Mark the shelves instead of the books ..maybe in alphabetical order etc..

Search google.com for "free library mangement software"
Reply:Perhaps you can color code your books - not putting markers on them, but like another said, mark the shelves. You can print up something in a fancy font onto some faux parchment of varying colors which can catagorize your library and still be elegant. Faux parchment can be found in varying shades that aren't too gaudy or noticible. Also, electronically you don't need a special program. Excel is a database program that is specific for catagorizing. The help should have tutorials on how to create a database that you'd be comfortable with.
Reply:you could alphabetize and input your books as numbers on your computer system - of course you will have to define each numerical value. But this may be helpful as you can keep books from 1- 350 or so in a certain place, and your computer program (Maybe excel) would tell you which number the book is. It will also be easy for people to know where to put them back when they take them down for reading because they are alphabetized, and you can always add new books to your system. Storage wise, I don't know what your space looks like...but eventually, you could actually make your library somewhat decorative, by having a wall of book shelves - it could really be nice looking if you build it right. This could also allow you to organize the books by type and topic. Good luck to you
