What are some of the oldest books in your collection?

NOT just the ones you've bought or received yourself, but also any that have just been handed down through your family over the years.





In my case, I have alot of books, in varying conditions, from the late 1800's. Mostly schoolbooks as many of my family were teachers.





As for books I got myself, I still have many books I got 20+ years ago and several I got 30+ years ago.

I do have several noteworthy books that are not quite as old as these, but I chose the 1920's as a cutoff date. I also have several books, such as some by Poe %26amp; Tennyson in which I can find no date at all. They look ancient though!

Reply:I have a copy of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland from the 1920's or 30's (I'd have to double check). I also have a Farmer's Almanac from the 1920's.
Reply:Until it was damaged by a water leak, I owned a mint condition set of Encyclopedia Britannicas from about 1933 or so.





I still have many books from the 1910s-30s. One is a Physical Hygiene book which is a real kick to read and discover what kids were being told back then.
Reply:The oldest book I have is "Popular Lectures on Theological Themes" (1888), but I have no idea where it comes from and it looks awfully boring in that old-fashioned English.





From my 1940's childhood: my favourite is "Ferdinand the Bull" and I still have it. Another is "Chessie the Cat" from the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. It's not published now because it has some very racially pejorative language but I still love the cat.
Reply:My oldest books are from my Grandmother. I have an original edition first publication of "Gone with the Wind" that I treasure. That's my oldest book.
Reply:I have 22 book series of "The Elsie Books" by Martha Finley. The earliest was copyrighted in1868 and the last in1897. I found them in an attic of an old house more than 50 years ago.

Reply:I have a Webster's dictionary printed in the 1900s that was my great grandfather's. According to my grandmother, he memorized a page out of it every day.





I also have a Companion to English Literature that I found at a thrift store, printed in 1932.
