What is the best age to begin reading the Harry Potter books to my children?

I have two children. One is five and one is three months old. The oldest has had to deal with the death of his maternal grandfather, his paternal grandmother, his maternal great-grandmother, and his paternal great-grandfather. He is scared sometimes at night and has a very sensitive heart-- he's very disturbed by the violence of others. I am wondering when to introduce the kids to the books, since they will all be out before they begin reading any of them. How to pace them, when to start. When will it mean the most, since there is no longer any waiting between releases. I have not read any of the books in the series myself.

What is the best age to begin reading the Harry Potter books to my children?
They should start reading them at least age 11. Fist start telling them things like," Imagine if you could do magic with just a flick of a wand." From there you could show them the books , give them a little more details like riding a broom, you know stuff like that interested me before started reading the books.
Reply:Sad story- but not to put a finer point on it - Harry material is not the best to start with -they are volumes! Try some Roald Dahl short stories at bedtime and keep the bigger larger longer epics for a later time. If the children begin to read then you can talk to them about the adventures but to read such volumes aloud you must have a lot of patience.

The very best age is around 10 - though by that time they can read it themselves and so lifts the task a little for now. By the time they are 10 there will be other books and stories to read.
Reply:Don't read them harry potter books. Ever. If he is as scared as you say, do you really think that witch craft and sorcery will make it all disapear? Try books like,

Franklin

Blues clues

Magic school bus (Educational)

Or seasame street.

You know, something cute, and fun for young kids. Something that will give them good memories for when they're older. I know That I have great memories off of the books that I read as a kid.

Just have fun picking out cute books, and thinking how fun it will be to read these to your kids, and see their faces light up. Hope this helps =)
Reply:thats so sad sorry well id say 10 or 11 it really depends on the child, though i started at 9
Reply:I started when I was 7 and have grown up with the series. As I got older, so did the level of the books. So, I recommend starting him when he's 6 or 7. Those books are the reason I read at a college level in 3rd grade. They really got me into reading early in life so I love reading (especially harry potter). Good luck and have fun!!

PS: Have him read the books BEFORE watching the movies.
Reply:It depends on the kids, of course, but in general, I think kids about 8 will have a big enough vocabulary to understand and enjoy HP.

To start kids on longer read alouds, you've got to start with the classic, Charlotte's Web. I read it to my son and daughter when they were 4 %26amp; 6. Follow that with the Ramona Quimby books by Beverly Cleary.

Only read them books you love! Read to them even after they know how to read!!
Reply:I would say 11 or 12, that way they can identify with Harry a little more, as hs is 12 in the first book. But also remember even Rowling has stated these books are about death. It will depend on the temperment of your children as they age.
