How do you get the cigarette smoke smell out of old books and mags?

My mother in law, who is an extremely heavy smoker for most of her 70+years, has given me some very old and dear crochet books. They have not been stored away very well and have an extremely foul stale cigarette smell in them. Does anybody have ANY ideas at all as to how to get that horrid smell out? I really want to look thru these, I just cant stand the smell! These are heirloom craft reference books, and I really want to save them.......HELP

First get them out of the original box they were stored in. Next put them in a fresh, clean box. Make a potpourri of baking soda. (a piece of material with baking soda in it and tied up) place it in the box, cover tightly with lid. You may have to replace it a couple times for about a week. This should eventually "pull" out all the foul odor of smoke. Good Luck sweetie I know how precious these must be and will be even more so after she is gone. Lord bless

Reply:try setting them outside for a few days in the sunlight. doubt it will really take all odor away.

Air them, choose a nice day, not too sunny but not cloudy either. Bring all the book outside and put them under the sun while flipping about 20-40 pages to a new section every 1/2 hours (meaning you'll have the book open at different page every 1/2 hour).


If you worry about the sun will harm the book then do it only in the morning then bring it in shade in the afternoon and evening. Repeat for a few days, until the smell is some what gone, they won't be completely disappear though. Sprinkling baking soda help but i don't like them sticking to my books.
Reply:take up smoking you won't notice the stink and you may die younger(a bit like learning to crochet)
Reply:I would sprinkle baking soda in the pages of the books and mags. If you can put them in a bag and leave them there for a couple of days. This works for me.
