What are some good books on black history?

I want to learn about the history of African Americans pretty much from Africa to today. I want to learn more about slavery, the American civil rights movement, the Black Panther Party, the current issues facing African Americans today and everything in between. If you know any good sources, books in particular, for me to learn about these things I'd really appreciate to know what they are. Thanks!

What are some good books on black history?
Roots by Alex Haley. Fantastic book, one of the best I ever read! Researched by African American Alex Haley, so he could discover his heritage. All true, It starts in Africa and describes the journey by boat to American and then the next five generations thereafter in American. Through the whole slave generation and beyond. A must read if you are interested to learn right from the very beginning of slavery, it's not always nice to find out some things but fascinating nonetheless. Enjoy!!
Reply:Start with books on the Middle Passage (slave trade)

Roots by Alex Haley

The Souls of Black Folks by W.E.B Du Bois

Books on Harriet Tubman,Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth should be included.

Too many to name....try the Library of Congress:

Reply:The best source I have found for looking up broad subjects like the Black Panther Party is an encyclopedia. They list sources on a topic, and usually cross-referencing the list with your libraries resources will offer a small list of reading material that is focused and informative. If you want more of a light read, this is not the approach to take, but the encyclopedia article itself may satisfy your knowledge craving.
Reply:Read African American literature, The African by Harold Courlander, Novel Jubilee by Margaret Walker, and W.E.B. Dubois .
Reply:read "Black Rednecks and White Liberals" or any other book by Thomas Sowell.
Reply:I have studied a lot of African-American women's history in the 19th century, so my books are biased in that direction.

Deborah Gray White, Arn't I a Woman? (slavery)

Rosalyn Terborg-Penn, African-American Women in the Struggle for the Vote

To Be a Slave (interviews with former slaves)

Anything by Darlene Clark Hine

Look for works written by influential African-Americans of their time: Ida B. Wells-Barnett, Mary Church Terrell, Frederick Douglass, Booker Washington, WEB DuBois, Maria W. Stewart
Reply:Search for "If He Hollers, Let Him Go"
