What's the difference between revised, abridged, and unabridged editions of books?

I'm looking for unabridged editions of some books for school, but all I can find is revised or abridged. Do revised and abridged mean the same thing, or are they different?

What's the difference between revised, abridged, and unabridged editions of books?
Revised means that substantive changes were made from an earlier edition. Usually this means the addition of new material, but it can also mean corrections for the times. A book about your legal rights may need revision if the laws have changed since it was first published, so the publisher will have the writer update the text for a revised edition.

Abridged means "cut." An abridged novel, for example, may have certain scenes cut out of it if the abridging editor decides you don't need those scenes to understand the story.

I teach college courses, and I want my students to be reading from the same text, so do make sure that you're getting the same edition that your teacher/professor wants you to have. If you can't tell, then certainly "revised" is a safer bet than "abridged."
Reply:Abridged means that some parts have been removed, either to make the work shorter, or sometimes because they're considered inappropriate, especially in school books. Unabridged means the opposite - you're getting the complete work. Revised means some portions have been rewritten, possibly making the book either longer or shorter.
Reply:unabridged--original form

abridged--shortened form

revised can mean updated to reflect current events or sometimes an author doesn't like how the editor changed his or her work and when the book is successful--he gets the work changed to the way he originally wrote it.
Reply:actually dere's a hell lot of difference among d 3. v usually speak of revised editions of text books while abridged n unabridged editions r spoken of in case of story books.

a revised editons of a book means dat sm changes hav been made in text of d earlier edition of d buk n a new betr edition has been published. d changes may b of different types lik changes in spelling or changes in d material of d text.

unabridged edition is d original book written by d author while an abridged edition is a retold version of d original buk. take d example of a story buk "abc" whose author is "xyz" den "abc" is unabridged version of d buk. n wen it is retold n published by some oder author den it is called d abridged version of d story. d abridged version may hav sm parts deleted n presented in a very simple manner but d matr remains d same.
Reply:Nnno,they don't revise means that a passage has been re-written or added to and unabriged means "In it's original form%26gt;
